DC Food: Little Sesame

It’s simple. Food should be delicious, unfussy and shared. And the new hummus spot below DGS Delicatessen in DuPont certainly delivers. Little Sesame opened in early 2016, serving lunch between 11:30am-3pm during the week. Verdict: yum, fun, worth it!

Here are a couple things to know before you go:

  1. Hummus is the main affair. Partners Nick Wiseman and Ronen Tenne have brought a little bit of Israel to DC with this venture, pushing us to reconceive the ubiquitous but still humble hummus. Although we’ve grown accustomed to it as a dip, each bowl is a unique and filling meal. Creamy hummus forms the base and is topped with your choice of seasonal vegetables and meat. It’s accompanied by warm pita and a zesty herb and greens side salad dressed with  sumac and honey.

  2. Veggies front and center. Little Sesame proudly joins a growing veggie-centric fast casual movement in DC. Four of the five bowls are veggie based, with one meat offering (currently pastrami and pickles in partnership with DGS upstairs). The classic bowl - topped with crispy chickpeas, smoked paprika and sauteed greens - is an easy entry point but the winter squash bowl wins the prize: different types of squash roasted until just caramelized, topped with pomegranate molasses and parsley. Yum.

  3. A visceral experience. There is something about eating with your hands around a communal table that makes the food taste better, right? This is the kind of gastronomical  experience that appeals to your gut. The flavors felt good, it was a space we wanted to linger in, we were quickly chatting with our table mates, it seemed perfectly reasonable to try a stranger’s bowl, we were in a good mood - in fact, we were having fun.
